Making homemade treats for your dog is a fantastic way to ensure they’re getting wholesome, healthy snacks without unnecessary fillers or additives. One easy recipe that both you and your dog will love is pumpkin gelatin dog treats. These pumpkin gelatin treats are not only easy to make, but they're also a wonderful, nutritious snack for your furry friend.
The joint-supporting benefits of gelatin, paired with the digestive and immune-boosting properties of pumpkin, make these treats a healthy addition to your dog’s diet. Not only that, but their novel texture is a fun way to mix up your dog's treat routine.
The Benefits of Pumpkin and Gelatin for Dogs
Pumpkin is a superfood for dogs. It’s high in fiber, which promotes digestive health and can help regulate your dog's bowel movements. The natural antioxidants and vitamins, such as vitamin A and C, support overall health, including vision and immune function. It’s also low in calories, making it a great ingredient for weight-conscious treats.
Gelatin is equally beneficial for dogs. Derived from animal collagen, gelatin supports joint health and can help maintain strong cartilage, which is especially useful for aging dogs or breeds prone to joint issues. It also promotes healthy skin and shiny coats, which are key indicators of your dog's well-being. Plus, gelatin is easy to digest, making it gentle on sensitive stomachs.
Now, let’s dive into the recipe!
Pumpkin Gelatin Dog Treats Recipe
Ingredients:
1/2 cup cool water
3 Pouches of Knox Gelatin powder (Tip: More gelatin results in firmer treats)
1/4 cup pumpkin puree (unsweetened and without additives)
1/2 -1/4 cup water (to be mixed with the pumpkin)
Supplies:
Measuring cups
Silicone molds. I've loved using this mold for training-sized treats!
Spoon
Mixing bowl
Small pan (for underneath your silicone tray)
Directions:
Prepare the Gelatin:Â Pour 1/2 cup of cool water into a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the unflavored gelatin over the water and let it sit for a few minutes while you prepare the pumpkin mixture.
Heat the Pumpkin:Â In a small pan, mix 1/4 cup of pumpkin puree with 1/4 cup of water. Heat the mixture on low for a few minutes until it's warmed through. Important tip: Water should be warm; not boiling.
Combine:Â Pour the warm pumpkin mixture into the bowl with the gelatin and water. Stir the mixture thoroughly until all the gelatin has dissolved.
Fill the Molds:Â Pour the gelatin and pumpkin mixture into the silicone molds, filling them to the top.
Chill:Â Place the molds in the refrigerator and allow them to set for 2-4 hours.
Store:Â Once the treats have set, pop them out of the molds and store them in an airtight container. They will stay fresh in the fridge for up to four days.
Storage Tip:
When making smaller-sized gummy treats, it's important not to leave them in the back of your fridge for too long. These treats are naturally low in moisture, so they can dry out after a few days if not stored properly. To prevent this, always store them in an airtight container and keep an eye on them so your pup can enjoy them at their freshest!
Enjoy making these treats, and don't forget to treat your pup to something special this fall!
